That was an amazing discus battle what we have seen tonight. World champion, European champion, Olympic champion, and all within 365 days: Robert Harting takes gold with 68,27m, Ehsan Hadadi silver 68,18m and Gerd Kanter 68,03 SB wins bronze!
The 2012 Olympic Discus Final was one of the best ones in Olympic History! All medalists threw over 68m.
Already the first round promised to be a great final with the opening throw of Ehsan Hadadi of 68,18m! Virgilijus Alekna 67,38m, Robert Harting 67,79m, Gerd Kanter 65,07m and Yennifer Frank Casanas 65,56m.
A sign that it will be a huge battle tonight.
Piotr Malachowski and Lawrence Okoye were still struggling in the first round and did not show what they were capable of. During the second round nobody could improve their first round result except Piotr Malachowski who did that with 66,92m and Benn Harradine to 63,16m!!
The third round for all 12 throwers began and for four finalists it meant the final throw…
For the most spectators on the stadium it was a pitty that Lawrence Okoye did not make the final with his best throw of 61,03m. Therefore the crowd did not have any Great Britain’s in top eight to cheer for. Jorge Y. Fernandez improved his position with his last round throw of 62,02m to the 11th place. The promising dutch thrower Erik Cadée with a personal best of 67,30 thrown in May 2012 “only” became 10th with his best attempt of 62,78m. Benn Harradine, the best discus thrower entertaining wise, improved his personal best this year to 67,53m thrown in Townsvill, Australia. He was a promising candidate for the final of the top 8 throwers but still did not achieve it with his best effort of the third round. 63,59m was not enough to became 8th after three rounds. The German Discus Thrower Martin Wierig who improved his personal best this year to 68,30 which ranked him 4th in the world threw 63,98m in the second round. This effort secured him a top 8 finish.
Therefore the final 8 was fixed.
Gerd Kanter could improve his effort in the third round to 66,02m but this should not be the end because he was still on the 5th place so far! Ehsan Hadadi threw again a very great throw with 67,28m and Robert Harting followed him with 67,27m. Alekna, Malachowski, Wierig and Casanas fouled during the third round.
Malachowski improved in the fourth round to 67,19m, Martin Wierig to 65,85 which meant 6th place so far and that was it for the fourth round, at least regarding improvements. Ehsan Hadadi again with a big throw of 66,98, Harting with 66,45m, Kanter with 65,96m and Alekna 66,07m! A great battle that everybody enjoyed.
The 5th round was the best one! First Kanter improved to 68,03m and took the silver position, then Alekna and Malachowski fouled. Robert Harting went into the ring and wanted to show something big and he did! 68,27m was his best effort so far and a GOLDEN one!!! At least so far….
Ehsan Hadadi did not want to accept that! He went into the ring and what did he do? He threw a massive throw!!! A really big one! It looked to be over 68,50 maybe 69m…. BUT, yes there is a but… he fouled it with his foot. Ehsan could not believe it and asked Piotr Malachowski if this really was a foul and he confirmed. Too bad for Ehsan Hadadi this could have been the gold.
Now the final round has begun! Too bad that nobody really improved during the final round. Gerd Kanter currently ranked third threw another massive throw of 66,99m. This meant BRONZE for GERD KANTER with a massive throw of 68,03m!!!
Now Robert Harting’s turn… Could he improve in the last round to secure his gold medal? No… he could not. He threw another one over 67m and to be explicit 67,08m. Therefore he had to wait until Ehsan Hadadi threw.
The final throw of the competition was from Ehsan Hadadi, he tried to get back the first position but just could not hit the discus correctly and fouled his last attempt.
The final results:
1 Robert Harting GER 68.27m
