Moldavian Hammer Thrower Marina Marghieva has been cancelled from the Olympic team of Moldova after a positive doping sample.
This was announced by the Head of the National Olympic Committee, Nikolai Zhuravsky. A statement from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is still pending.
In addition to Marghieva, the discus thrower Natalia Artyk has been tested positive and suspended as well. She was not supposed to go to the Olympic Games in London anyway. “The B-samples have shown that illegal drugs were in her body,” said Zhuravsky and stated that an investigation had been initiated. Both athletes might face a four-year doping suspension.
Marina Marghieva’s sisters Zalina Marghieva is still in the Moldavian squad competing in the hammer competition. Now there are already rumours about her using doping as well but these are at least so far only rumours.
