Readers of the German athletics magazine Leichtathletik and the German athletics federation website www.leichtathletik.de have voted for shot putter David Storl and hammer throw world record holder Betty Heidler as the German Athletes of the Year for 2011.
World Championships gold medallist 2011 European Athletics Rising Star of the Year Storl was a clear winner with 34.7% of the votes while Betty Heidler, who finished second at the World Championships but won 12 out of her 15 meetings during the year, took 27% of the women’s vote over another Daegu silver medallist Martina Strutz, the pole vaulter getting 23.3%. In total there were more than 15,000 votes.
Second in the men’s contest was two-time discus world champion Robert Harting with 19.1% while third was javelin world champion Matthias de Zordo with 12.8%. World Championships heptathlon bronze medallist Jennifer Oeser was third in the women’s poll with 14.5 %.
Germany’s Junior Athletes of the Year were hurdler Gregor Traber and European Athletics Junior Championships 3000m steeplechase winner Gesa Felicitas Krause.
Greece’s 2011 Athletes of the Year 2011 in Greece are high jumper Dimitrious Hondrokoukis, who was fifth at the World Championships and won at the Samsung Diamond League final in Zurich, and pole vaulter Nikoleta Kyriakopoulou, who was eighth in Daegu and set a national record of 4.71m at the Samsung Diamond League meeting in London.
The poll by the Greek national federation SEGAS was done via internet weighted with a third of the votes coming from the public, a third from the media and a third from the officials and coaches.
Second in the men’s voting was pole vaulter Kostas Filippidis and third was 200m specialist Likourgos Stefanos-Tsakounas. Triple jumper Paraskevi Papahristou and pole vaulter Ekaterini Stefanidi took second and third places in the women’s poll.
