GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP)- Yarelys Barrios of Cuba has broken a 24-year-old Pan American Games record in the women´s discus.
Barrios threw 66.40 meters to break the previous mark of 65.58 held by Maritza Marten of Cuba from the 1987 Pan Am Games in Indianapolis.
She says it is an incredible satisfaction to break such an old record from someone from her own country.
The 28-year-old Barrios broke the record on her first throw in Guadalajara. And the victory allowed her to defend her gold medal from the Rio de Janeiro four years ago.
Barrios, a silver medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, was third at the world championships earlier this year with a throw of 65.73m. The 66.40 mark would have been good for the silver medal in South Korea.
