Estonia´s discus thrower Märt Israel, fourth at the World Championships this year, told Estonian press that he hasn´t been able to compete in Maroco because of his name.
“I´ve had some interesting situations while crossing the border. Border guards have asked me wheather it´s Estonia or Israel,” he told during the interview for “Spordipühapäev”.
“When I competed in Israel in 2006 then everybody were amazed when I showed my passport. Of cource I haven´t been able to compete in Maroco because of my name.”
Successful season has rised Israel´s value among his opponents. “Everybody has been coming to me and congratulated “Awesome job!”.”
“Of course, together with good results there has been a lot of attention on me, some of it hasn´t been pleasant. Once I went out with my girlfriend for a coffe and Kroonika (Estonia´s magazine -TH) took a picture of us and made some kind of a story.”
Israel said that his season is over and he just wants to rest. “I am planning to have a vacation in Madeira with my girlfriend.”
