German throwers were on top at innovative DKB Duels meeting in Elstal on Friday, which saw head-to-head and round-by-round matchups between some of the best throwers in the world in front of 3000 spectators.
Hammer world record holder and 2010 European Athletics Championships gold medallist Betty Heidler achieved 77.53m, equalling the second best performance of her career, and also had two other throws over 76 metres.
She beat her Polish predecessor as world record hold Anita Wlodarczyk with a clean sweep 6-0, the 2009 world champion’s best throw being 75.33m.
Two-time discus world champion Robert Harting remains unbeaten this year after 13 competitions and defeated Poland’s European champion Piotr Malachowski 5:1, the German’s best effort going out to 66.50m while Malachowski could only manage 62.47m.
Zurich winner Christine Obergfoll beat Russia’s world champion Mariya Abakumova 4-2, the former European record holder’s best throw being 65.01m while her rival could only reach 63.99m.
Germany’s Daegu javelin gold medallist Matthias de Zordo again prevailed over Norway’s Olympic and European champion beat Andreas Thorkildsen, winning 5-1 with their best results being 79.00m and 78.17m respectively.
The only member of the International Team to win was Cuba’s Yareli Barrios, who beat Germany’s World Championships silver medallist Nadine Muller 5:0 in one round they both fouled – with their best results being 64.48m and 61.72m.
