The Estonian Athletic Association has confirmed a team of nine athletes for the Daegu 2011 IAAF World Championships.
The 2008 Olympic discus champion Gerd Kanger headlines the Estonian team. Kanter has been struggling with a back injury that he for from the BIGBANK Kuldliiga meet a week ago. He fell down in the ring.
“It did not feel anything after the accident, I thought it was okay. After a few days I started to feel a nerve pain. I know it will be good but I miss 3-4 days of good training!” he said.
The nation also has high hopes for 2009 European indoor heptathlon champion Mikk Pahapill, who has been focusing throughout the season on putting on a top performance in Daegu alongside fellow decathlete Andres Raja.
The men’s discus throw is another event where Estonia will be represented by two athletes, with Mart Israel alongside Kanter.
Sprinter Marek Niit, who has set 10 new national records this year alone, will enter in the 100m and 200m.
In the men’s javelin throw, Mihkel Kukk will step forward for Estonia.
In the women’s events, the team will be represented by three athletes: Maris Magi in 400m, national record holder Anna Iljustsenko in the high jump and current European U23 champion Grit Sadeiko in heptathlon.
