Estonia´s Märt Israel won the Gold medal at Universiade 2011 held in Shenzhen. His best throw was 64.07m, however, it was a nervous competition for him as he was placed 9th before the 3rd round. Then he threw 61.20m and guaranteed three more rounds. It was the second medal for him from these Games as he won Bronze in 2007 in Bangkok. He has attended at these Games for 4 times since 2003.
He became the third Estonian to win Gold in the men´s discus at Universiade. In 2001 the legendary discus thrower Aleksander Tammert won in Beijing and in 2005 the reigning Olympic champion Gerd Kanter repeated that in Izmir. Israel also proved his good form before the World Championships that will start next week and fans are expecting him at least a top 8 finish.
Third in the men´s discus was Poland´s Przemyslaw Czajkowski with his third round throw of 63.62m. He was followed by Ronald Juliao who threw the new Brazilian record of 63.30m and the junior world record holder Mykyta Nesterenko from Ukraine who threw a decent 62.60m. Nesterenko´s lifetime best still stands on 65.31m since 2008.
