Latvian team opened his Gold medals score in the third day at the European Junior Championships when the junior javelin world record holder Zigismunds Sirmais won the men´s javelin with a 81.53m which is also the new championships record.
Although the competition was not easy for Sirmais as Polish Marcin Krukowski took the lead with his first round throw of 79.19m, it was a new lifetime best for a young talent. He was the leader until the fifth round when the junior world record holder Sirmais finally hit the good throw of 81.53m.
Sirmais has bettered the junior world record twice this year. The standing record is 84.69m.
Polish finally got silver and bronze was given to Pavel Mialeshka of Bulgaria. He threw 76.59m.
Latvian future in the men´s javelin looks bright. Fourth was Rolands Strobinders with a new lifetime best of 75.71m.
“Well, the win here wasn’t a surprise for me since my personal best is the junior world record. I expected to win but I thought that it would be a little bit easier, I got my best result at the fifth attempt. I was sure that a good result is going to come since I have thrown over 80 metres fifteen times. I like the stadium here but the weather wasn’t the most pleasant one, it was too hot and it made the competition a little bit harder,” Sirmais spoke with a happy voice.
