Kibwe Johnson (Usa), now 29 years old threw 80.09 m in UberlÃ¢ndia, Brazil (GP Internacional CAIXA/ Sesi De Atletismo, 18 May 2011) and took the 2nd place in the men´s hammer world ranking. He´s the highest ranking American since 2000!
Johnson´s result was also a record of the Meet – previous best was 79.29 m, made in 2009 by Dilshod Nazarov who was 2nd this year with 77.41 m. The bronze went to Igors Sokolovs (Latvia) who threw 75.84 m.
Only the 4th American over 80 meters and the 3rd all-time, Johnson said he hoped to throw near to his personal best (78.25 m, 2005). “Beating my lifetime best was a surprise, I’m very happy,” said the American. “I was really keen on getting back to Brazil and now I’ll keep my heart in UberlÃ¢ndia. I will also compete in Grands Prix in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and hopefully be better again. My goal this year is to win the PAN (in October in Mexico) and qualify to the World Championships (in August in South Korea), ” he said.
In the women´s hammer throw, Yipsi Moreno (Cuba) kept her promise to beat her own meeting record, which was 70.50 m since 2007. She finished with 72.89 m ahead of Argentina´s Jennifer Dahlgren who threw 70.57 m , and Arasay Thondike (Cuba) with 69.76 m.
“I’m happy that I won and bettered my own meeting record but I know I can do much better,” Cuban said. Yipsi Moreno, 2-time World Champion and 2-time Olympic silver medallist has a lifetime best of 76.62 m . “I want to improve my personal best as well, to be competitive in the World Championships and the NAP,” said Moreno, who skept a season in 2009 to give a birth to her first child.
